Bull sale kicks off

Published December 1, 2009

The 44th Red River Valley All Breed Bull Sale kicked off with the annual Chili Supper and Bull Session Monday night at Cattlemen’s Livestock Commission on Clement Road in Paris.

More than 98 bulls and 125 replacement heifers are scheduled for auction at 1 p.m. today.

The sale is sponsored by the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee, and Dr. David Anderson, economist with Texas AgriLife Extension Service, spoke at the Bull Session Monday night.

Anderson told the group just about the time the hog producers were getting their industry going strong they hit a snag.

“Along came the swine influenza, and exports of pork ended, causing prices to drop,” Anderson said. “People did get to eat a lot of pork at reduced prices.”

Anderson said the beef industry was equally hit.

“Just when the prices were beginning to level off, along came the declining economy,” he said. “People continued to eat beef. They just ate less steaks and more hamburger meat.”

The chamber’s Agriculture Committee presented three Lamar County students with $1,000 scholarships at the Bull Session.

Pecos Chea McDonald of Blossom, Kayla McCall of Blossom and Jamie Johnson of Paris each received scholarships.

Those were presented by Agriculture Committee chairman Kenny Dority.

A $10,000 endowed scholarship to Paris Junior College also was presented in memory of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Buster.

The annual baked goods auction to raise scholarship money brought in $2,940 Monday, almost double that of the past year.

An Italian Cream cake donated by Derald Bulls brought $130.

Harvey Properties’ Renee Harvey’s chocolate chip cookies brought $210.

Dr. Wally Kraft paid $550 for a chuck wagon dinner for eight. It was donated by Century 21’s Rusty Lowe.

Bobby Walters’ homemade peanut brittle brought $110, as did PJC President Pam Anglin’s red velvet cake.
