Lady Cats past Forney

FORNEY — Ariole Jenkins and ShaTaylor Moore combined to score 29 points and lead the Paris Lady Cats to a 49-40 win at Forney Friday night.

Jenkins scored 15 points, while Moore added 14. Madison Porter and Shanice Hill followed with six and five, respectively.

Paris trailed 14-11 after one quarter, but the Lady Cats’ defense clamped down in the second and third quarters, limiting Forney to single-digit scoring in each one.

The Lady Cats (6-5) carried a 22-21 lead into halftime and were ahead 37-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

“We were patient on offense and didn’t rush anything. We ran our plays and stayed within our offense, and our defense was just great,” said Paris coach Tarshanda Ferguson.

Paris is off until Thursday when it competes in the Durant, Okla., tournament against Fayetteville, Ark.

CLARKSVILLE — The sixth-ranked Clarksville Blue Tigers improved to a perfect 4-0 by shocking the Class 2-A second ranked Gladewater Sabine Cardinals 64-63 in a thriller played in the Clarence L. Nix Jr. Gym on Saturday night.

“I think tonight the thing that makes me most proud is that we grew up,” said Clarksville second year coach Joe Sigler after the game. “That’s the second time we were like that-there at Bonham we didn’t quit and here we didn’t quit.

After trailing 33-24 at the intermission the Blue Tigers cut the deficit to 48-43 as the teams moved to the final stanza.

Playing against a team that houses eight seniors and that fell in the Region III championship game by one point one season ago, Joe Sigler’s young Tigers were plagued by foul trouble throughout the contest and with less than 5:00 remaining in the game both leading scorer Jarrion Roberts and fellow sophomore H. B. Rosser had four personals. Roberts would pick up his fifth personal with 1:11 left and with the Tigers trailing 58-56.

Roberts still led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points.

Post player Zach Royce would step to the line for the Cardinals extending their advantage to 59-56. But how quickly Sigler’s troops responded. Senior starting guard Demontrae Scales drained a three pointer with :57 left dead-locking the contest 59-all. Then Freshman reserve guard Quinton Beaty recorded a steal and lay-up while being fouled to hand the Blue Tigers their first lead of the game at 61-59 with :38 left, as he missed the charity shot. Scales added a bucket with :27 remaining to extend the lead to 63-59.

The Cardinals used a pair of free throws from all-state point guard Colton Kirk to draw to within 63-61 with 21 ticks left, but Clarksville sophomore Radonte Edwards made one of his two charity shots with :12 left to extend the lead to 64-61.

Kirk would attempt a three pointer from the corner that failed but Shane Lewis got the putback for the visiting team and was fouled by freshman Gary Moore as time expired. His free throw attempt missed the rim sealing the win for the Blue Tigers.

“I thought the freshman Gary More played above the rim and they really had no answer for him and our other guy Jarrion Roberts,” explained Sigler.

The Cardinals jumped out of the gate early moving to a 20-6 lead in the initial quarter thanks to the hot shooting of Noah Jackson. Gladewater Sabine led 22-13 at the end of the first with Jackson scoring 16 points in the first. He would end the half with 27, but managed just seven additional points in the second half to conclude the game with 34 points.

Clarksville shaved the advantage to seven points on three occasions in the second, the final arriving with 2:43 left when Roberts scored on a drive making the score 29-22, but the Tigers managed just two more points before the half.

The Clarksville pressure defense helped open the path to victory particularly during the fourth quarter as several steals led to baskets.

The Tigers would produce five three pointers in the game but Jackson would duplicate that total and the Cardinals connected on seven in the game. The Tigers made 17 of 25 free throw attempts while the Cardinals hit 10 of 14.

Moore and Beaty stepped up big for the Tigers in the win as did Scales. Moore scored 13 points while recording key rebounds throughout the game.

“I told the kids right after the game that at this point we are no longer a secret and this is what they wanted, but now there’s some accountability that goes along with it . We’ll celebrate today and Sunday but Monday we’ve got to come back and go to work,” said Sigler.

The defeat was the second this season for Sabine. The Cardinals have also lost to Tyler T.K. Gorman.

Scales added 11 points including a pair of three point bombs and Beaty also produced a trey while scoring five points.

Clarksville will entertain Mt. Vernon on Tuesday night.

Gladewater Sabine’s jv won the Clarksville jv tournament on Saturday defeating host Clarksville 54-24 in the championship game. Demarcus Bell and Trea O’ Neal led the Tigers with 8 points each.
