The 44th annual All Breed Bull and Heifer Replacement Sale kicks off with a chili supper and dessert auction at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at the Cattlemen’s Livestock Commission, 1354 Clement Road. The Bull Sale is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the same location.
There are currently 98 bulls representing four breeds — Angus, Brangus, Charolais and Hereford. There also will be approximately 100 heifers, open and bred, and some pairs on the auction block.
The Bull Sale is held each year by the Agriculture Committee of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce to raise funds for scholarships to students in area schools who are pursuing a degree in the agriculture field, including participants in 4-H activities, Future Farmers of America and the Lamar County Junior Livestock show.
The Monday evening chili supper is open to the public as well as buyers and consignors of bulls and heifers. The speaker for the evening is Dr. David Anderson, professor and economist-livestock and food products marketing, with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University.
Following the meal, patrons are invited to the ring area for an auction of baked goods donated by A Piece of Cake and Sweet D’s of
Paris, among others. Local celebrities and cooks in the area have also prepared baked goods which will be sold as part of the auction — including Imy Walters’ divinity, a blue ribbon-winning recipe at the Texas State Fair.
“The bake sale offers the opportunity to the community who are not interested in purchasing a bull or heifer to support the local FFA and 4-H clubs,” said Judy Daniels, secretary of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce.
Proceeds of the bake sale and profits of the All Breed Bull Sale and Heifer Replacement Sale go back into the community through these clubs and the Agriculture Students Scholarships. Winners of this year’s scholarships will be announced at the sale.
