Newborn found dead

Published August 27, 2009

POWDERLY — At about 10 a.m. today Lamar County Sheriff’s Office found a dead newborn infant at a residence in Powderly several hours after the approximately 21-year-old mother was transported to Paris Regional Medical Center after giving birth to a second child, according to Lamar County Sheriff B.J. McCoy.

The Sheriff’s Office learned of the possibility of a second child when hospital personnel found evidence of a second birth, McCoy said.

When questioned, the mother told officers she had placed the baby in a trash bag and left it in a trash can, spurring a several-hour, extensive search by detectives, patrol officers, volunteer firemen and a Texas Ranger in and around the residence in Powderly where the mother reportedly lived with her grandparents.

Searchers found the baby in the mother’s bedroom at the Powderly residence about 10 a.m.

The second baby was born a healthy six pounds and is doing well, McCoy said.

He said Child Protective Services has been notified, but as of early today does not know if any action will be taken by CPS or if any charges will be filed against the mother.

The dead newborn will be taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

“The charges (against the mother) largely depend on the outcome of the autopsy,” McCoy said.

The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing.
