Community Thanksgiving service set

Published November 14, 2009

The 2009 holiday season is starting off in Paris on Thursday with a community unity service.

Area church congregations will gather at the annual Community Thanksgiving Service, set for 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Baptist Church, 454 2nd N.E. St.

Sponsored by the Lamar County Christian Ministers Association and the Paris Ministerial Alliance, the event has been held for the past 15 to 20 years.

“We just wanted to carry it on in the community,” said Paul Dearinger, president of the Lamar County Ministerial Alliance. “I’m hoping everyone will take time out to come together in fellowship.”

“In light of the recent bad press in our community, it’s good to see people come together for a good cause,” he said.

Each year an offering is taken in support of community organizations, and this year funds will benefit Co-Ministry, Agape House and the Boys & Girls Club.

Kenneth Rogers, pastor at St. Paul Baptist Church, will welcome attendees to the church. Van Lazaroff, pastor at First United Methodist Church, is to speak at the event.

Dr. Jerard Mosley, president of the Paris Ministerial Alliance, also commented on the importance of the event to the community.

“Despite our community’s diversity, I think what brings us to together is the common denominator,” he said. “There needs to be a point in all our lives when we recognize we need to come together as a community.”

Mosley said the reason for the service is to come together spiritually, rather than focusing on race relations or other issues within the community.
