The Paris’ defense clamped down on Kaufman in the second and third quarters and the Lady Cats won their home opener, 71-43, Tuesday night.
Lady Cat point guard Shanice Hill scored a game-high 22 points, had six assists, five steals and five rebounds, while junior post Tiara Hall recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, blocking three shots and getting two steals.
Paris (2-3) turned 10 Kaufman first-quarter turnovers into eight points to take a 17-10 lead into the second stanza. Hall got things going early by getting a steal and going coast-to-coast for a basket at the 6:40 mark of the first to give Paris a 3-0 lead. Baskets by Payton Chapman and Hill allowed the Lady Cats to go ahead 7-0.
Kaufman finally got on the board at the 5:23 mark when Shelby Petross knocked down a jumper. Petross and Karia Bantista each scored 14 points to lead the Lady Lions.
Paris took its first double-digit lead when Ariole Jenkins drove the lane and scored a basket, and Jessica Vines hit a free throw at the 2:32 mark of the first, giving the Lady Cats a 14-4 advantage.
Paris started the second period off strong, as Hall scored two baskets on putbacks and added a free throw to put the Lady Cats ahead 22-10. Kaufman cut that lead to single digits when Petross nailed two baskets, including a three, and Bantista knocked down another, leaving the Lady Lions trailing 23-17, with 3:50 remaining in the second quarter.
That would be the closest Kaufman would get to overtaking the Lady Cats, who closed out the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 32-19 lead into halftime.
ShaTaylor Moore started the run by sinking two free throws.
She finished the game with seven points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Jenkins scored 11 points for Paris.
Kaufman had 26 turnovers in the game, while Paris had 16.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I’m seeing progress,” said Paris coach Tarshanda Ferguson. “We ran the floor better tonight than we have in our previous games, and we also ran our plays. Like I told the girls, when you run your offense good things happen.”
In the third quarter, Petross nailed her second three-pointer with 7:03 left and the Lady Lions trailed 34-22 at that point. It would be almost five more minutes before they scored again, as the Lady Cats went on a 9-0 run to go ahead 45-22.
Hill scored two baskets on the fastbreak, Jessica Vins got another, Hall scored on a putback, and Jenkins hit a free throw during that run.
Paris went on to carry a 47-27 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Cats closed out the fourth by scoring the final six points of the game.
A runner by Hill and a steal and layup by Hall pushed the Lady Cats’ lead to 51-27 during the first minute of the fourth.
The Lady Cats are competing in the Fantesy of Lights Tournament in Wichita Falls beginning Friday.
• The Lady Cats’ junior varsity defeated Kaufman 34-30. Dreisha Sims scored 14 points, while twins Mimi and Didi Ricks added nine and seven, respectively, for Paris.
