Patriots go to air against Mustangs

The Prairiland Patriots’ running game helped them control the ball, but it was two big pass plays that delivered the knockout blow against rival Chisum Friday night as the Patriots shut out the Mustangs, 20-0, in the annual Lamar County Showdown.
With the win, the Patriots (8-0, 5-0) not only clinched a playoff berth, but advance to the postseason as a District 12-2A Division 2 representative this year, thanks to Hooks beating Clarksville, 27-12, Friday night, to also clinch the Division I seed. Paul Pewitt also clinched a playoff and a Division II berth with a 47-6 win over DeKalb in a game that was moved from DeKalb to New Boston’s stadium because of field conditions.
The loss eliminated any hopes that Chisum (5-3, 2-3) has of making the playoffs. The Mustangs have two games remaining on the season as they travel to Rivercrest on Friday and return home to host Redwater in the finale. Redwater beat Rivercrest, 49-12, on Friday.
It was the 10th consecutive victory by the Patriots against Chisum.
“I thought Chisum played a good game against us. They played about as well as I’ve ever seen them play,” said Patriot coach Glen Schuelke, who improved to 10-1 against Chisum.
While senior running back Randal Sessums was the workhorse for the Patriots with 152 yards on 26 carries, senior quarterback Payne Schuekle was the X-factor, as he completed 7 of 10 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Schuelke hit a wide open Josh Esch in the end zone on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter to give Prairiland a 6-0 lead, which would remain the score for most of the game.
The Mustangs got only one penalty in the first half, but it was a big one, as they were flagged for a 15-yard facemask penalty during a play in which they had stopped Prairiland’s Tanner Connot on a fourth-down run at the Chisum 24. Three plays later, the Patriots scored what ended up being the game-winning touchdown.
“That facemask penalty was huge. It hurt us,” said Chisum coach Don Hasley.
Chisum almost answered with a touchdown of its own when Chisum quarterback Jeremy Eddington broke free on a 54-yard run, but he was forced out of bounds at the 28.
“You have to credit Payne (Schuelke) for stopping Jeremy on that run. He didn’t make the tackle, but he took an angle to the goal line that forced Jeremy to cut it back in,” said Chisum coach Don Hasley of that play.
That drive stalled in red zone at the Patriot 18. The next Mustang drive ended at the Patriot 24, and those would be the best chances that Chisum had to score.
“We felt like if we didn’t make a lot of mistakes and give them points off of our turnovers then we would be in a good position to win the game. We were in a good position, but it didn’t work out for us,” Hasley said.
In a game in which Chisum and Prairiland made very few mistakes, it came down to the few big plays that decided the outcome.
With Prairiland still clinging to a 6-0 lead early in the fourth quarter, Schuelke came up with another one, as he completed a pass to his favorite target, senior receiver Tanner Connot, who scampered 36 yards into the end zone with 10:36 remaining. Sessums’s two-point conversion run left the Patriots ahead 14-0.
“We felt like we held up well against their running game, but it was their passing game that beat us,” Hasley said. “They called the right plays at the right time.”
After scoring for a second time, the Patriots’ defense took over from there, stopping Chisum on the next drive, highlighted by a Zack McLamore sack of Chisum quarterback Jeremy Eddington on fourth down.
Prairiland then sealed the game with a 35-yard scoring drive that ended with Sessums romping two yards for a score with 5:12 left, leaving the Patriots ahead 20-0.
Eddington was intercepted by Connot and Justin Harris to end the Mustangs’ next two drives.
Eddington was held to 103 yards rushing on 17 carries and he completed 5 of 11 passes for 62 yards, but the Patriots’ defense kept the Division I recruit bottled up most of the night.
On a muddy field, yards were tough to come by for both teams, as the Patriots finished with 294 yards total offense and Chisum ended up with 213, after gaining 123 yards in the first half.
McLamore, at linebacker, had 10 tackles and a sack. Lineman Taren Sarter and linebacker Riley Johnson each had eight. Sarter also had a sack. Brian Jones had seven tackles at linebacker, while Sessums had six tackles and two sacks at defensive end.
Senior linebacker Brian Glover led Chisum in tackles with 14, including nine solos and a tackle for loss. Junior end Kyle Hasley and senior end Eddington each had seven.
