A welcome opportunity for Parisians
Staff Report
Published October 19, 2009
It is not often Lamar County residents have the opportunity to hear classical chamber music played by those who live in our own community.
But that opportunity presents itself at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church sponsored by the Tempo Music Club, a group of women who meet once a month to enjoy various types of music.
The Paris Chamber Orchestra will be playing a variety of selections including Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Other selections include a medley of works from Corelli, Handel, Beethoven and Purcell, “Volklied” by Franz Joseph Haydn, and a pair of works by Bach. The orchestra will also essay some American folk music, including “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Hoedown,” “Billy Barlow” and “Amazing Grace.” The finale of the concert is highlights from the Broadway musical “The Sound of Music,” by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Members of The Paris Chamber Orchestra include violinists Gail Kennedy, Celia Williams, Gloria Cooper, Sherrie Wright and Chuy Potter. Dr. Stephen Burns plays the viola, and Dakota Gilcrease is on bassoon. The group also includes student violinists Dorothy Gerling, Madison Scott and Jonathan Gerling.
What a wonderful opportunity to expand musical horizons to include genres other than country, pop, rock and jazz. And, what an opportunity to expose youth to something other than what they download on their portable media players.
Both the Paris Chamber Orchestra and the Tempo Music Club should be congratulated for presenting us with this opportunity.
