Children’s Museum has something for kids

Published August 5, 2009

We join the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum in welcoming Sharline Freeman of Pecan Gap as the museum’s new executive director.

Freeman began her education career as a social studies teacher and later became the director of Enterprise City, a program in Richardson that allows children to run a model city for a day. While director, the program received three national awards. Most recently she served Texas A&M University — Commerce as a student teacher supervisor in its alternative certification program.

The museum, located in Commerce, is the destination of many family outings as well as field trips for children in classrooms throughout Northeast Texas. It provides opportunities for a playful and creative learning experience, something children of all ages enjoy.

The museum’s hands-on exhibits and planned activities are related to state-mandated school curriculum requirements and serve to enhance and supplement classroom curriculum. It provides a welcomed opportunity for teachers to use the museum’s offerings as an extension of classroom learning opportunities.

Since opening its doors in 2002, the museum has served numerous children from throughout the area as it provides creative and enriching learning experiences through its many exhibits.

Its exhibits include a children’s performance stage along with airplane and space shuttle replicas. Also featured are replicas of a frontier living room, a jungle, a grocery store and ancient pyramids among other exhibits.

The museum’s hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Children ages 2 to 16 are admitted for $5 and adults are charged $1. Children under age 2 are not charged admission. Northeast Texas Children’s Museum is located in the Watson Center building of Texas A&M University — Commerce on Texas 50 and Culver Street (Texas 178 in Commerce. The museum shares the parking lot with the Children’s Learning Center across from the Holiday Inn and Walmart.

Plan soon to schedule a family outing to the museum. You and your children will enjoy the many activities offered there. And while you’re there, say hello to our friend and neighbor, Sharline Freeman of Pecan Gap.
