NL loses play-in game to Van Alstyne

Published November 1, 2009

DODD CITY — North Lamar’s two-week ascension in the District 10-3A standings came to an abrupt end on Friday.

The Van Alstyne Lady Panthers dominated North Lamar’s Pantherettes throughout the match, as North Lamar fell to the Van Alstyne squad by scores of 19-25, 15-25, 19-25 in a tie-breaking match that determined the third, and final, playoff team in the district.

North Lamar (21-18) struggled through much of the match but appeared to have a firm grasp on Game 3, as it led 13-3 early in that game. The lead evaporated quickly, though, and Van Alstyne took 22 of the next 28 points to claim the win in the match.

Sophomore Sara Dunmon led the Pantherettes with 12 kill shots and two service aces in the match. Senior Haley Lyckman added five kills, while sophomore Chelsea Jordan contributed with four kills. Senior setter Rainey Smith led the team with 13 assists and sophomore Morgan Flippen had eight assists.

Van Alstyne advances to the postseason and is scheduled to face District 9-3A runner-up Argyle in the bi-district round, while North Lamar’s season comes to an end without an opportunity to compete in the postseason.

The Pantherettes made an improbable run in the final two weeks of the season by winning their final three games, including a five-game win over District 10-3A champion Commerce, and forcing the tiebreaker against Van Alstyne for that final playoff spot.

“The girls did a good job fighting back to give us a chance to make the playoffs,” North Lamar head coach Jimmy Fendley said. “We were down to 2-5 in district, so to come back and win three straight to tie with Van Alstyne was very good. It was tough for us to lose in that game after we fought so hard to get back into the race.”

Detroit victorious

over James Bowie

The Detroit Lady Eagles finished their District 17-A campaign with a 13-25, 25-23, 25-9, 25-23 triumph over James Bowie.

Detroit (34-3, 11-1) finished as the district champion and advances to the area round of the playoffs to face the winner of Waskom/Beckville. Avery (10-2 in district) and James Bowie (8-4 in district) were the second and third-place teams in the district.

Brianna Williams and Stephanie Cashion led the Lady Eagles with 13 kill shots apiece. Adrienne Bronner had 12 kills of her own, while Taylor Eddins added eight kills.

Brooke Griffin led Detroit with 29 assists and Cady Hammett had a team-high 16 digs.
