SULPHUR SPRINGS — Hopkins County Republican Party chairman Erwin A. Cain has thrown his hat into the ring for State Representive District 3, held for the past 10 years by state Rep. Mark Homer, D-Paris.
This is the second campaign for the Sulphur Springs attorney. This past year he ran an unsuccessful bid for 62nd District Judge against Democratic incumbent Scott McDowell of Paris.
“At least I am not starting out from a cold slate,” Cain said about name recognition in the district composed of Delta, Franklin, Hopkins, Lamar, Red River and Titus counties.
“I have received an outpouring of support since making my campaign official,” Cain said this past week from his home in Como. “I look forward to a vigorous race. I will try to stay above the fray and address the issues.”
Cain emphasized, “I will be a real champion of conservative values.”
Mount Vernon busi-
nessman Kirby Hollingsworth has carried the GOP banner against Homer for the past three elections, almost snatching the seat in 2004 but falling increasingly short of his goal in 2006 and 2008.
Hollingsworth said early today he planned to watch the campaign from the sidelines this year.
“I took a position with the Sulphur River Basin Authority, and I plan to fulfill my obligation there,” Hollingsworth said.
In announcing his campaign, Cain talked about his intent.
“I am running because I love my country, and I love East Texas,” Cain said. “Like many others, I’ve watched in shock at the incredible overreaching of the federal government into our rights and our wallets. That same liberal philosophy is knocking at the door of our state Legislature, and East Texans deserve to have a committed conservative who will never shift with the prevailing political winds.”
Cain, 49, said he has seen the Hopkins County Republican Party experience growth in the past several years. In the 2008 primary, almost five times more voters turned out than in 2006 or 2004. Cain also has been instrumental in the GOP Chairmen’s Coalition. The group is comprised of Republican leaders in eight counties across the region including the five counties in District 3.
In addition to a 21-year law practice, Cain owns a real estate investment company.
“I’ve spent the last 21 years defending individuals and businesses from the costly and wasteful whims of frivolous lawsuits by plaintiff lawyers,” the candidate said. “I have supported practical reforms to limit the reach of lawsuit abuse and to promote a healthy business environment. I will continue that fight in the Texas Legislature.”
In 1982, Cain earned an associate degree in management from Kilgore Junior College. He graduated from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University — Texarkana, in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in management and marking. In 1988, Cain earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas, graduating in the top 20 percent of his class.
He and his wife, Hope Cain, have married for almost 21 years and reside in Como, located just outside Sulphur Springs. The couple has three children: Hunter, 17, Averi, 14, and Honour, 11, all students in the Como-Pickton school district. The Cains are members of First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs where Cain teaches an adult Sunday School class.
“As a husband and a father of three, I have learned the importance of strong family values, teaching by example , and personal responsibility,” Cain said. “That starts with integrity, the bedrock of a strong moral core. I will always champion the sanctity of life and fight to preserve traditional marriage.”
