COOPER — The Cooper Bulldogs recorded five interceptions and held visiting Whitewright to 93 total yards and the Cooper offense was just as good as the Bulldogs rolled to a 35-8 victory.
Roy Pierce, Montrel Roberts, Jonathan McGraw, Tommy Walker and Pee Wee Jeffery all picked off passes in the game, while Holden Jenkins recorded five tackles, including three tackles for loss. Nick Reeves also had five tackles, while Landon Rackley and Lucas Lehman each had four.
“Defensively we played well. We were on top of our game,” said Cooper coach Ronnie Green. “Offensively, we did a good job, but we had several penalties, which is something that we’re going to have to eliminate.”
Cooper’s offense racked up 362 total yards, led by Montrel Roberts, who rushed for 72 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns.
Roberts got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 27-yard run. Dan Beeler added the extra point.
Cooper then went ahead 14-0 when quarterback Ty Huie completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Walker. Beeler added the PAT.
The 14-0 advantage stood until the third quarter when the Bulldogs added two more scores to carry a commanding 28-0 advantage into the fourth quarter. Roberts scored his second touchdown on a 17-yard run and Huie scored on a one-yard keeper in that period.
Cooper’s final score came on defense when Wyzer Moore recovered a fumble in the end zone to give Cooper a 35-0 lead.
Whitewright avoided a shutout by scoring a touchdown in the fourth.
“This win was a total team effort. It’s been a long time since we have been 2-0 to start the season. It gives us something to build upon for next week,” Green said.
Jeffery rushed for 65 yards on nine carries, while Chris Ballard gained 63 yards on 11 totes.
Cooper is at Mount Vernon on Friday.

Warriors take first game from Wolfe City, 19-13, in overtime
WOLFE CITY — The Honey Grove Warriors and Wolfe City Wolves were involved in a race to claim their first win of the 2009 season Friday night.
The Wolves took an early lead, but the Warriors came back to tie the game before the end of regulation and send it to overtime.
From there, Honey Grove head coach James Fuller reminded his team of the importance of finishing the race. It took two overtimes periods, but the Warriors eventually picked up a 19-13 win.
“We just talked to our kids about it going into overtime,” Fuller said. “One of our goals is what we call ‘finish,’ and we refer to it that way because we want to finish the race. You can’t let someone catch you from behind in the race. It takes an all-out effort to finish, and that’s what our kids did.”
Neither team managed to score in the first overtime period. Honey Grove (1-1) was the first team to get possession of the ball in the second overtime and scored on a quarterback keeper.
On the ensuing possession for Wolfe City (0-2), the team converted a third down play with 25 yards to go and made it to the Honey Grove 2-yard line. The Honey Grove defense then sealed the win by forcing a fumble, which linebacker Joey Farr recovered to end the game.
The final moments of the contest were different from the opening moments, which Fuller said were “in Wolfe City’s favor.”
The Wolves scored the opening points and went up 7-0 early before the Warriors tied it before halftime. Wolfe City went ahead in the third quarter, but Honey Grove once again tied it with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
“Both sides played well,” Fuller said. “It was a really hard-fought game on both sides.”
Honey Grove will attempt to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into next week when it will go on the road to face the Chisum Mustangs, who defeated Bells 49-6 Friday.
