HONEY GROVE — Honey Grove’s defense swarmed all over the field and forced eight turnovers, and the offense gained 319 total yards en route to the Warriors’ 34-20 victory over Howe on Friday in the final home game of the season at Warrior Stadium.
Five of the eight Howe turnovers were interceptions. Two of those belonged to Honey Grove sophomore Kurt Ottmo, who returned one of them for a touchdown in the first quarter. The others were picked off by Cam Brooks, Brandarious Brown and Corwin Louis.
Sophomore quarterback Dillon Baugh was a leader on the offensive side for Honey Grove (3-5, 2-3), as he rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown and passed for 87 yards and a touchdown.
“It was a good win for us,” Honey Grove head coach James Fuller said. “Our kids played hard. We played well in all areas, meaning offensively we played well, defensively we played well and our kicker played well. When that happens, it usually means good things for our team.”
Baugh opened the game’s scoring with a five-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The Warriors continued their hot start with a one-yard run by senior Zack Patt and a seven-yard interception by Ottmo later in the quarter. Kicker Aaron Spann tacked on all three extra point attempts.
Howe (4-4, 2-3) scored its first touchdown early in the second quarter on a two-yard run, but the kicker missed the extra point attempt.
Baugh connected with Dijon Finney about three minutes later for a 28-yard touchdown to give the Warriors a 27-6 advantage at halftime.
Howe displayed a never-say-die attitude in the second half, however, and scored the first two touchdowns of the second half to cut Honey Grove’s lead to 27-20 early in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors put the final nail in the coffin with 3:07 remaining in the contest after a 20-yard touchdown run by Patt.
Patt had eight rushes for 51 yards, and he also caught three passes for 31 yards. Courtland Finney carried the ball 10 times for 65 yards.
Ottmo led the team in tackles with six. Louis and Brooks had five tackles apiece. Brooks, Jordan Mallicote and Sam Velis each had a fumble recovery.
Honey Grove is scheduled to travel to face Whitewright (1-7, 1-4) on Friday. Whitewright defeated Tom Bean, 25-19, this past Friday for its first win of the season.

Hawkins overpowers Detroit in tough 27-6 loss
HAWKINS — After back-to-back District 17-A victories, the Detroit Eagles suffered a setback Friday in the form of a 27-6 loss to the Hawkins Hawks.
The difficulty began early in the game for Detroit (2-6, 2-1), which drove down to Hawkins’ 15-yard-line on the game’s opening drive but committed multiple drive-killing penalties.
Those penalties, combined with the inability to consistently tackle the Hawkins players, proved to be the Eagles’ downfall.
“Pretty much the entire night was mental mistakes in crucial situations and not tackling well,” Detroit head coach Stuart Proctor said. “You have to credit Hawkins’ running back because he was quite a big load for us to tackle, but our form just wasn’t good.”
The mistakes didn’t harm Detroit until the second quarter. It was then that Hawkins (4-4, 2-1) scored a pair of touchdowns and converted a two-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The Hawks added their third touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half, but Detroit responded later in the third quarter with a touchdown of their own. That score was a 7-yard scamper by senior running back Deon Patt.
On the next drive, the Detroit defense played well and thought it had forced Hawkins to a three-and-out series. A facemask penalty changed that, though, as Hawkins continued its drive and stopped Detroit from gathering the potential momentum.
The Hawks went on to tack on another touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Patt carried the ball 15 times for 54 yards and Cray Dickerson had 13 carries for 91 yards. Detroit quarterback Kenton Tucker completed 2 of 9 passes for 22 yards and threw three interceptions.
Chaz Dickerson led the team in tackles with nine. Patt had seven tackles, while Tucker and Cray Dickerson contributed with six tackles apiece.
Detroit is scheduled to travel to host Maud at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Eagles’ final home game of the season.
