NEW BOSTON — Paul Pewitt proved to be just too much for the Clarksville Blue Tigers to handle on Friday night, as the Brahmas took advantage of a lot of scoring opportunities in the game to post a convincing 55-21 win over the Tigers. It was a Senior Night contest moved from Clarksville to New Boston due to poor field conditions at New Century Club Field.
Clarksville head coach Dewaski Davis said that the Brahmas are a good ball club.
“They’re bigger than what they were last year and a whole lot stronger. They are a pretty good ball club. It was just hard matching their size when they were out-weighing us by about 50 to 60 (pounds) a man,” Davis said. “But the kids played hard and Pewitt had to earn every bit of it. They didn’t have all of the explosive plays that they had last year, and that was a good sign for us.”
The win sets the stage for the showdown between Pewitt and Prairiland for first-place honors in District 12-2A, as both teams will enter the district finale on the Brahmas home field Friday with perfect 6-0 league marks. Pewitt is 7-2 overall.
“We just play one game at a time. We’ll start looking at Prairiland tomorrow. They’re a very good football team and we’re going to try to get our kids ready to play for the district championship,” Paul Pewitt head coach Reggie Kumrow said after the game.
The Brahmas, led by the running of Bam Finley and Jerry Braddock, bullied their way to 506 rushing yards in the game. That total accounted for the total offensive output by Pewitt. Finley gained 226 yards on 30 carries, while scoring four touchdowns. Braddock used 24 totes to pick up 162 yards and quarterback Jordan McFarland added four touchdown runs.
Clarksville fell behind early, trailing 14-0 with 55 seconds left in the first quarter after Finley scored his first touchdown on a run of 12 yards, but the Tigers responded quickly as Jarold McPherson returned the ensuing kickoff from his own 17 to the 18-yard line of Pewitt.
One play later, Blue Tigers quarterback H.B. Rosser fired a pass over the middle to freshman wideout Kelton Scales, who raced across the goal line. Radonte Edwards’ extra-point kick drew Clarksville to within 14-7 with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
The playoff-bound Brahmas weren’t fazed, as Kumrow’s team marched 65 yards to extend the advantage to 21-7 when McFarland ran six yards for a touchdown with 8:24 remaining in the initial half.
Clarksville will travel to DeKalb for the season finale Friday night.
