Fire destroys Hope Agri warehouse

Published August 31, 2009

More than 100 volunteer fire fighters battled a fire at Hope Agri Products of Texas Inc. on U.S. 271 near Camp Maxey Saturday night.

Paris dispatch alerted the fire departments at 8:45 p.m. The heavy fire kept personnel busy at the mulch plant until approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

“This was the biggest fire I’ve been on,” said Ronny Bass, emergency management coordinator for Lamar County. Bass is a career firefighter with more than 20 years of experience.

“It was pretty hairy for about three hours,” he said.

Powderly Volunteer Fire Department was first on the scene, and called for additional departments. In all, there were 10 Lamar County volunteer departments on the scene assisting in suppression efforts.

The largest area of fire damage was in a large warehouse on the premises, which contained heavy equipment, supplies and a conveyor. Four or five fork lifts, multiple containers of chemicals and several rolls of plastic, which weighed approximately 15,000 pounds each, in the building, Bass said.

A hydrant on the premises provided a low stream of water. Fire fighters instead relied on water supplied by tanker shuttle.

Paris Emergency Medical Services paramedics were on the scene, although there were no injuries, Bass said. Lamar County Red Cross also assisted as did Lamar County Sheriff deputies.
