Candidates set for city council election

Eight individuals have thrown their hat in the ring for a seat on the Paris City Council.
The filing period ended Monday and the ballot order was to be drawn earlier today, according to Janice Ellis, city clerk.
Incumbent Joe McCarthy has no opponent for District 1, which serves northeast Paris,
Councilman Kevin Kear in District 2, representing northwest Paris, has competition from Jason Rogers and Jackie Stinson.
John Wright has filed for the southwest Paris District 3 seat to be vacated by Mayor Jesse Freelen. Freelen has served two terms and cannot seek re-election.
In District 6, representing southeast Paris, incumbent Edwin Pickle is to face challenger John Petersen.
The last day to withdraw from the race is March 16.
Early voting for the election begins April 26 and runs through May 4. All early voting is to take place at the Lamar County Courthouse Annex, 231 Lamar Ave.
Only four of the seven council seats are up for election. Still with another year on their two-year terms are council members Steve Brown in District 4, (north and northeast outside Loop 286) Will Biard in District 5 (south central Paris) and Rhonda Rogers in District 7 (far northeast Paris and outside Loop 286.)
Election day is set for May 8, and polling places are as follows:
•District 1 and District 2 - St. Paul Baptist Church, 4044 2nd. St. N.E.
•District 3 - Travis Junior High, 3270 Graham St.
•District 6 - Paris Junior College, Bobby R. Walters Workforce Training Center.
