Playoffs mark fresh start

Published November 3, 2009

Paris High and Chisum enter their respective volleyball playoff matches today facing the same issue.

Both the Lady Cats and the Lady Mustangs suffered setbacks in their regular season finales.

However, both have put losses behind them and are solely focused on their bi-district round postseason clashes.

Paris High (29-8), the second-place team in District 10-3A, is scheduled to compete against Sanger, the third-place team in District 9-3A, at 7 p.m. today at Princeton High School.

Chisum (27-7), the second-place team in District 12-2A, is set to square off against Melissa, the third-place team in District 11-2A, at 7 p.m. today at Quinlan Ford. The original time for that match was 6 p.m., but it was announced Monday that the start time was pushed back one hour.

Paris was the second-ranked team in a tough District 10-3A that included four state-ranked teams. The Lady Cats were ranked ninth last week in the Class 3A state poll ahead of District 10-3A champion Commerce, which was ranked 10th last week in the state. Commerce clinched the district title with a three-game victory one week ago in the regular season finale against Paris.

Coach Melanie Hodges and her Lady Cats enter the postseason riding a two-match losing streak after falling in five games to Class 2A Aubrey, the 13th-ranked team in its class, Saturday in Gainesville.

Sanger (24-14) made the playoffs after finishing third in District 9-3A with a 6-4 record. The Lady Indians upset No. 14 Argyle to earn a playoff berth. Argyle is set for a bi-district round match against Van Alstyne.

Last year, Paris entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed and advanced all the way to the Region II quarterfinal round before bowing out of the playoffs. The Lady Cats defeated Celina in bi-district and then beat District 11-3A champion Carrollton Ranchview in the area round before losing in the third round to Prosper.

Tonight’s Paris/Sanger winner faces Carrollton Ranchview, which once again clinched the District 11-3A title to earn a first-round bye.

Chisum entered the postseason after falling to Hooks in the final match of the regular season. Melissa entered the playoffs as the third-place team in District 11-2A, behind district champion Gunter and second-place Bells.

Because of the way the bracket is configured, a win by Chisum in its playoff match today would automatically give the Lady Mustangs a spot in the regional quarterfinal round.
