The Rallye de Paris comes to town once again, this time with a new location and new name — the Roxton Rallye de Paris. The races take place Saturday, Nov. 28.
Organizers Juanita and Richard Miller of Armadillo Rally Logistics and Rally Engineering have put together a performance rally, which covers county roads in the southwest corner of Lamar County near Roxton.
Entrants will roll into Paris Friday for registration, a technical inspection and exposition. Registration is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce office at 8 West Plaza. Inspection of the cars is at the same time, held at Farmers Markes. Following the inspection, the cars will be on display at the Plaza from 5 to 7 p.m.
The actual event is two rallies in one. A morning race, Roxton Rocks, is followed by the afternoon event, Roxton Rumbles.
An area for spectators has been set aside for each route.
The Roxton Rocks morning session begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. Spectators should take Texas 137 west from Roxton through Noble toward Petty. Turn west on CR 26850 to the start/finish of the rally.
The afternoon Roxton Rumbles begins at 2:30 p.m. with the last car crossing the finish line at 7 p.m. To get to the spectators area, take Texas 137 east to CR 24580, north to CR 24420, which ends at the spectator area of the rally.
These performance rallies are timed races with one car on the route at a time. At the end of the day, the times are totaled and the fastest team wins. All roads are closed to traffic for safety reasons. If a non-rally vehicle is on the road, the race is stopped until the road is cleared.
Consideration is given to those who have legitimate business on the roads during the rally. Organizers ask if there is an emergency that radio operators stationed along the route be notified so the rally can be halted until the emergency can be taken care of.
At this time there are 10 vehicles entered in the rally, coming to the area from Missouri, Colorado, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. Spectators will be able to see the cars up close at the “pit” in downtown Roxton. Vehicles set to race include a Mazda MX3, Datsun 510, VW GTI, Saab 93, VW Beetle, Acura RSX, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Saab 900 T and Subaru Baja.
The awards ceremony will be held at the Roxton Fine Arts Center.
Organizers and volunteers will return to the route Sunday to ensure the area is as clean as when the race began.
The rally is sanctioned by and insured through Rally America.
