County health dept. to hold flu clinic
Staff Report
Published September 17, 2009
An early flu season has prompted the Paris-Lamar County Health Department to step up vaccination efforts this year, according to Carol Hill, the department’s head nurse.
“We have received reports from schools that students are out with flu symptoms and this is really early in the year for that,” Hill said. “We began vaccinations early — on Sept. 1.”
“We recommend that everyone get a flu shot early this year,” Hill said.
Prairiland High School was hit harder than most other schools this past week, but the school secretary said numbers of students out sick have decreased this week. Other schools contacted earlier today report the number of absences are about normal.
To accommodate more people, especially those in the northern part of the County, a flu vaccine clinic is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Dairy Queen in Powderly on U.S. 271 north.
Hill said it is not unusual for the department to set up special clinics whenever possible.
“We just want to reach as many people as possible,” she said.
The cost of the flu shot is $15 for anyone between the ages of 6 months to 18 years and $20 for anyone over the age of 18.
Payment will be accepted in the form of cash or checks only.
All participants will receive a free ice cream cone.
For information, call the Health Department at 903-785-4561.
Although some early cases may be the H1N1 (swine flu) variety, Hill said the state is not taking tests from Lamar County.
The vaccine for H1N1 is not expected to be available until mid-October.
