Tigers fail to spoil Dragons’ homecoming

Published October 11, 2009

REDWATER — The Redwater Dragons leaped back into the District 12-2A playoff picture by shaking off a 6-6 halftime tie with the Clarksville Blue Tigers by scoring 13 unanswered points in the third quarter en route to a 19-6 homecoming win Friday night. The victory was the first district win for the Dragons, who improved to 1-2 in league play.

Redwater had dropped the opening games of its district slate to Paul Pewitt and Hooks by a combined margin of just 12 points. Both of those teams are 3-0 in league play.

Clarksville slips to 1-2 in district competition and 3-3 overall.

It was a bruising running attack in the second half that paved the way to victory for Redwater. Sophomore fullback Dewey Fleming led the attack, as he produced several punishing runs while producing 151 yards on the ground and adding a pair of touchdowns.

Redwater senior quarterback Hunter Flood contributed 124 yards on the ground and added the final Dragon touchdown.

The Dragons marched straight down the field to paydirt during the initial possession of the second half, with Fleming and Flood as the only players to handle the football. The seven-play, 71-yard drive gave Jeff Stine’s team the lead for good.

It was capped by Fleming’s 21-yard run to the goal line with 8:53 remaining in the third quarter. Chance Edwards added the extra point kick to give the Dragons a 13-7 advantage.

The Blue Tigers gave the home team good field position to set up the final tally of the ballgame when Clarksville coach Dewaski Davis elected to attempt to pick up a first down on a fourth down play from the Blue Tigers 47-yard line. Clarksville running back Quan Bell was hit hard on the Tigers 45, thus turning the ball over on downs to the Dragons.

“Basically they came out and rose to the challenge and we didn’t accept that challenge, and we didn’t execute well in the second half. It showed. They made some plays on us,” Davis said after the game.

One play later, Flood found daylight down the left sideline on his 45-yard sprint to the end zone with 37 seconds still remaining in the third quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but Redwater had concluded scoring in the game.

The Tigers didn’t pose much of a threat in the final stanza they were unable to move the football deep into Redwater territory.

A fumble recovery on the Dragons 44 yard-line by freshman defensive end Gary Moore with 8:17 remaining in the first period set the stage for an impressive drive for a touchdown by the Tigers. Sophomore quarterback H.B. Rosser, who gained 90 yards in the contest, carried the ball on five of the seven offensive plays during the series.

His final carry in the drive was for one yard and a touchdown with 5:58 left in the period. The extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the Tigers on top 6-0.

But Redwater fired right back on the next possession, using a punishing 10-play drive to reach the goal line with Fleming bouncing into the end zone from the 2 yard-line with 1:09 remaining in the first. The conversion run failed, leaving the contest tied 6-6, a score that would stand at the intermission.

The Dragons did not complete a pass in the game, while Clarksville only had five total passing yards. Both teams turned the ball over on one occasion during the four periods of action.

Clarksville is scheduled to return to its home field Friday night to face the Chisum Mustangs, as the Tigers try to even their district record. Chisum will also be out to even its league mark after falling to Hooks and district favorite Paul Pewitt in its last two district games.

“We’ll be a whole lot more focused next week against Chisum. We’ll work on some fundamentals in practice this week and we’ll respond better,” Davis said.
