Area Halloween festivities

Published October 29, 2009

In addition to door-to-door trick or treating, Paris and the surrounding area offers other fun Halloween festivities for youth on Friday and Saturday.

The First United Methodist Church is hosting a “trunk or treat” event in the west parking lot from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Vehicle trunks will be open and youth will be able to trick or treat from car to car.

Chicota Baptist Church, too, is hosting a “trunk n treat” event after hot dogs are served at 6 p.m.

For older youth, Paris Church of God is hosting a “hell house” at James Hodge Motor Co. The hell house will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Bill Owens with James Hodge said the hell house is suitable for more mature children. A 12-year-old, he said, would probably be an appropriate age to go through it, but the maturity level of the child would need to be evaluated by the parent. The hell house takes 20 to 30 minutes to walk through, Owens said. The exhibit includes 10 or 12 different scenes depicting situations such as teen pregnancy, suicide, drunk driving, drugs, stress and peer pressure.

Admission to the hell house is $5.

James Hodge is also hosting a trunk or treat event in the dealership for youth who are too young for the hell house. A few games will be on hand as well, Owens said.

For some theatrical Halloween entertainment, North Lamar High’s fall production, “The Mummy’s Claw,” will be shown at 9 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium.

Clarksville has two different Halloween events scheduled, according to Ann Rushing, Clarksville mayor.

On Friday from 2 or 2:30 to 5 p.m., local businesses sponsor “Trick or Treat on the Square” for local children as they get out of school.

A Halloween carnival is scheduled in Clarksville for Saturday at the Title 1 Elementary School Gym on Clarksville Street. Indoor games, pumpkin decorating contests and costume contests will all be part of the festivities. A “spook ride” is also held from 6 to 10 p.m.

Cooper Lake State Park/South Sulphur Unit hosts even more Halloween events on Saturday, including a kids pumpkin carving contest, and Halloween campsite decorating for campers.
