Auction action benefits local club

Published December 4, 2009

More than 300 items will go up for bids at the 60th Annual Boys & Girls Club of the Red River Valley Youth Auction Saturday.

The auction, which raises funds for youth activities, will begin at 6 p.m. in the First Baptist Church-Paris Family Life Center.

A silent auction with an additional 60 items begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m.

Auction offerings this year are a meat lover’s paradise, with dozens of items featuring ribeyes, hams, turkeys, and even whole dinners among the donated items going up for bids.

Big items include a 2009 Honda Rukus valued at $2,499 and a Denali hot tub valued at $4,000.

Sports lovers will get their chance to bid on 2010 NEXTEL Cup passes or a Mavericks package, along with sports memorabilia and sports equipment.

Those who like to dine out will have the option of bidding on several packages of restaurant meals.

Car-care do-it-yourselfers will have items that can aid their cause, and home decoration items are plentiful in the auction.

One unusual item is a Dr Pepper motorized cooler.

Other items include office supplies, lawn and garden care supplies and even live plants.

For those really hungry, a smoked tenderloin with fixins for 10 people will come up for bids.

A great get-away item is the Horseshoe Bay Retreat package valued at $750.

The silent auction features similar items, but adds hair care and hair cuts, cleaners certificates and dozens of eating-out opportunities.

“This year’s auction is more critical than any before, with cuts in funding of mentoring programs,” said Vicki Ballard, board president.

The mentoring programs offer homework assistance, ways to abstain from alcohol, drugs and early sexual involvement and offers youngsters ways to combat negative peer pressure.

“Without a very successful auction event, we will have no choice but to cut some of the most needed and most helpful programs and services we offer to the most at-risk kids,” Ballard said.

The club has been operating since 1939, and the auction is the main fundraiser.

Ballard said all money raised through donations of items or cash will go to help youngsters.

Buyers can bid by phone by calling 785-6431 or go to the church Family Life Center to bid in person.

Those wishing to make donations in memory or in honor of someone can do so by calling the same number.

Auctioneers will be Sims Norment, Reggie McDowra and Durrell Roddy.

Free refreshments are compliments of Sara Lee and Coca Cola.

The auction will be broadcast on SuddenLink Channel 15 and on KPLT radio, and listeners can call in and make bids.

Goal for the event is $70,000.
