ROXTON — City Drug Store Museum in Roxton is to host a Christmas Open House Saturday, Nov. 21.
The museum board scheduled the open house from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the museum. Refreshments will be served.
“The museum has been a smashing success,” said Phillip Rutherford of the board. “ Literally hundreds of people have toured since the doors opened three years ago. They have loved it, the older ones always remarking how it reminds them of drug stores of their youth and the younger in awe of what a mid-twentieth century drug store was really like. Now with the addition of the recreation of Dr. J.R. Creed’s office, many are returning for a second look. Scarcely a week passes that people do not call for personal and group tours.”
Fundraising has been highly successful, with donations from individuals, the First Bank of Roxton, and a grant from Northeast Texas RC&D.
With the money, the stonework has been power-washed, the building completely rewired, the guttering correctly replaced, the stone-joints tuck pointed, the transom windows replaced, all cabinets and cases secured, the concrete floor patched, the display windows refurbished, and the rear woodwork rebuilt. The next big project is to install a public restroom.
“Since the support of present and former Roxtonites, not to mention touring visitors, has been so overwhelming, the museum board invites everyone to the open house,” Rutherford said. “Just attending will demonstrate support of the City Drug Store Museum and Roxton.”
