Senior incentive

Published March 12, 2010

Former state Rep, Pete Patterson, D-Paris, a member of West Lamar High School’s Class of 1953, will be the featured speaker at the annual Chisum High Incentive Program for Seniors (CHIPS) banquet/silent auction, scheduled for 7 p.m. March 27 in the high school gymnasium.

Patterson is to become the latest member of the CHIPS Honored Alumni. The event is held each year to raise funds to provide scholarships to Chisum students who graduate as a Texas Scholar.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on any campus or from any CHIPS board member.

The son of the late Sherman and Opal Patterson White, Patterson grew up in the Brookston community where his parents and grandparents were farmers. After high school, he went to work for Babcock and Wilcox in Paris.

In his “spare time” he farmed and ranched, while running a tarpaulin repair business and attending classes at Paris Junior College. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for West Lamar ISD in the early 60s.

In 1966, Patterson was elected county commissioner in Lamar County, a position he held for six years. In 1972, he ran for state representative and was elected to represent Lamar County, as well as Delta, Fannin and Red River counties in the Texas Legislature. He held the position for 22 years.

During his time in the legislature, he was a champion for public education and served as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee several years. In 1994, Patterson ran for and won the Democratic nomination for State Agriculture Commissioner. He was defeated in the General Election by Susan Combs, who now serves as State Comptroller.

Since his retirement from public office he has remained active in the Democratic Party locally and works as a real estate agent for Century 21 Harvey Properties Inc. in Paris.

Patterson continues to live on his ranch in the Brookston community with Doris, his wife of 57 years. They have four children, Lynn, Deborah, Gary and Darrell; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Patterson has been an ardent supporter of Chisum ISD over the years with all of his children and many of his grandchildren being West Lamar or Chisum graduates.

He and Doris are longtime members of Oak Park United Methodist Church in Paris.
