Scouts retire flags in ceremony
Staff Report
Published October 29, 2009
Boy Scouts held their first flag retirement ceremony in the Flag Garden at Starrett Funeral Home recently, an event termed inspirational by funeral home owner/operator Arvin Starrett.
“We are very happy to provide this service for the community as well as our local Scouts,” Starrett said. “Retiring ‘Old Glory’ is one of the Scouts most sacred ceremonies. And I believe there are many in this Northeast Texas community who will take advantage of the opportunity to properly dispose of the American flag.”
Several local businessmen, along with City Manager Kevin Carruth, assisted scouts in retiring battered flags in the ceremonial burning.
The funeral home receives flags between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They are accumulated and properly stored until a formal retirement ceremony.
Scoutmaster David Hanson and Troop 3990 presided over the first ceremonial flag burning.
