Hohenberger to receive ‘Friend of the Year’

Published November 30, 2009

Former Chisum Independent School District Superintendent Harvey Hohenberger of Cooper will receive the Texas Public Schools “Friend of the Year” award Wednesday in Dallas.

A reception in his honor is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Frontiers of Flight Museum, 911 Lemmon Ave.

Hohenberger, now Region 8 Education Service Center executive director in Mount Pleasant, served as Chisum superintendent from 1993 until 2003. Together with current Superintendent Diane Stegall, the two educators brought the district from sub-standard to exemplary ratings.

Chisum was one of the first schools in the state to implement a performance/standards curriculum in grades K-12 and to create a 21st century curriculum based on student performance plus state and national standards, according to a release by Friends of Texas Public Schools, an organization devoted to stressing the positive about education in Texas.

“I am very humbled by it,” Hohenberger said during a telephone interview late this past week. “The organization has many great people telling the story about public education in Texas.”

Hohenberger said the honor serves as a “reflection of the fine staff at Region 8.”

“I want it to be a reflection of the people there and all the work they do,” he said.

Friends of Texas Public Schools heralded Hohenberger as someone who “exemplifies an educational leader who personally and professionally advances public education in Texas.

“For this, the Friends of Texas Public Schools is honoring him as its 5th Annual Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year, the release stated.

Previous honorees include Richard Haynes of Haynes & Boone; Charles Butt, HEB; Tom Frost, Frost Bank; and Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines.

“We are proud to recognize Mr. Hohenberger’s legacy of commitment to, and support of, public education in Texas,” said Scott Milder, president and CEO of Friends of Texas Public Schools. “His efforts represent the positive energy we believe is so desperately needed in our public schools.”

Hohenberger, a graduate of Honey Grove High School, began his education career in 1974 as a teacher/coach in Cooper. His first principal job was in 1978 at West Lamar ISD. He returned to Cooper ISD in 1979 as high school principal and served the district as assistant superintendent from 1986 until May 1993 when he accepted the superintendent job at Chisum. He became Region 8 executive director in February 2003.

He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University — Commerce. He earned his superintendent certification in 1995 and attended Lamar University Superintendent Academy in 1996.

Hohenberger was the recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Service Award of Phi Delta Kappa of Texas A&M University-Commerce and 2006 recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He was elected to serve on the Executive Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Supervision Curriculum Development and served on the Executive Board of Texas Association of School Administrators and Texas Rural Education Association.

He lives in Cooper with his wife, Gail, who is a retired secondary math teacher from Cooper ISD. They have a son, Chad, and a daughter, Mendy, along with six grandchildren. In his spare time, Hohenberger enjoys ranching and team roping.
