HONEY GROVE — The Honey Grove Community Enrichment Center will hold its grand opening ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The center, which will cater to needs in the community, has been established in Old Honey Grove High School, 107 Bois d’ Arc St.
“Project United Community Development Corporation is a non-profit outreach that provides public services to low and very low income individuals and families in a manner that encourages individual growth, self-sufficiency, self respect and ultimately the economic growth and stability of our community,” project director Lon Boyce said.
He said the community center is a safe haven of services and support programs.
“Youth will have various programs such as counseling, computer classes and recreational games,” Boyce said. “Our group has found that most teens become problem teens because they do not have anything else to do. These community services and support programs cause teens to have positive attitudes that keep them from becoming troubled teens.”
The center will provide out of school programs, job skills training, comprehensive youth development, men’s mentor programs, parenting leadership training, senior citizen programs, a teen “birds and bees” program, and a women’s mentor program.
The center will provide youth opportunity to participate in various cultural dances, plays, arts and crafts.
It also will provide training for child development and daycare.
The center will have food service programs and distribute food and clothing for families in need.
There will be rehabilitation assistance for ex-offenders who need transitional homes.
“I graduated from Honey Grove in 1982, and this project is a dream come true,” Boyce said.
