Dragons battle Walter State in NJCAA tourney

Published March 21, 2008

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — When teams play a game a day it's nearly impossible to get a good feel for their next opponent.

So, instead they focus on their team and what it does best, while letting the proverbial chips fall where they may.

Paris Junior College might have had a day off Thursday, and coach Ross Hodge had the opportunity to watch Walters State Community College Thursday morning, but it's still not nearly enough time to prepare for today's 11 a.m. opponent.

Walters State CC (32-2) entered the tournament with four players averaging double-figures, led by freshman A.J. Thomas' 19 points. Laquantis Stewart averages 18 points and 7.7 rebounds, and Sirlester Marting and Michael Jenkins each average 11.6. Terrance Britt averages nine points and eight assists.

One thing that is certain is the Senators are well-coached. Bill Carlyle was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame Monday. In 31 seasons at Walters State CC, Carlyle has compiled a 660-274 record.

Joining Carlyle in the 2008 Class were former Kilgore College player Ned Duncan, Brown Mackie College coach Francis Flax, Southeastern Community College coach Joe O'Brien and former Leicester Junior College coach Page Rowden.

Walters State CC, based in Morristown, Tenn., has made the tournament four times in his career — all in the last seven seasons.

The Senators reached the second round of the consolation bracket with an 85-77 victory against Eastern Wyoming Thursday morning. They lost to Eastern Arizona College 69-53 in the first round.
