Avery city secretary indicted

Published November 26, 2009

Longtime Avery City Secretary Billie N. Stephenson, 54, has been indicted by a Red River County grand jury for theft by a public servant.

The indictment covers a period of more than three years from January 2006 to June 2009, in which investigators said Stephenson had received City of Avery funds for more than her normal salary.

The indictment charges theft by public servant for more than $20,000 but less than $100,000.

Investigators said the alleged theft may have been going on for more than the three years covered in the indictment.

A call to Avery City Hall was answered by a temporary office worker who said she knew nothing of the case.

Red River County and District Attorney Val Varley, who once represented Avery, has recused himself from handling the case and turned it over to Lamar County and District Attorney Gary Young.
