Proctor’s Eagles fall to Bison

Published August 30, 2009

DETROIT — Stuart Proctor’s first game as head coach of the Detroit Eagles proved to be a first for the Eagles as well.

Detroit was defeated 50-22 by the Buffalo Bison Friday night at Eagles Stadium, marking the Eagles’ first setback under Proctor.

It was also the first time this squad of Eagles saw a predominantly run-oriented opponent. That’s precisely where the Bison put the majority of their focus, using running back Aurelio Dominguez to carve lots of yards on running play after running play.

“Give Buffalo credit,” Proctor said. “They had a big offensive line and a couple of quick running backs. Our team hadn’t seen that kind of a running offense so our kids had trouble finding the ball.”

Detroit (0-1) fell behind Buffalo (1-0) by a score of 14-8 in the latter portion of the first quarter after a 50-yard pass from senior quarterback Chaz Dickerson to senior receiver Anthony Eddins. Buffalo then tacked on another touchdown to add seven more points to its side.

The Bison added another touchdown to go up 28-8. Detroit was near the red zone before halftime, but threw an interception and Buffalo ended the threat.

Detroit scored two more times in the third quarter. Junior quarterback Kenton Tucker connected with Deon Patt for a 40-yard touchdown, and running back Crey Dickerson scored on a 15-yard run.

Buffalo closed out the contest with a fourth-quarter touchdown to seal the victory. The Bison picked on the Eagle defense for 51 points, but Proctor was pleased with the aerial attack.

“I was very pleased with our passing game,” Proctor said. “For us to throw for 145 yards, I was pretty impressed that we connected with our receivers like we did.”

Detroit has an open date Friday, so the team has two weeks to work out the kinks in advance of its Sept. 11 home game against Cumby.
