Leadership Lamar County ponders project

Published September 13, 2009

The 2009-2010 Leadership Lamar County class kicked off Thursday with a meeting at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Paris.

The meeting served as a meet and greet session for the class and introduced the top three candidates for the class project, said Keith Compton, Leadership Lamar County board president.

In past years, Leadership Lamar County has undertaken successful projects such as the Trail de Paris, Leon Williams Park and establishing the Children’s Advocacy Center.

This year for a class project, the group is choosing between a veterans’ memorial at Love Civic Center, restoring the peristyle at Bywater’s Park or creating a recreational park on a plot of donated land in west Paris.

Discussion on the projects began Thursday, and the class will most likely pick a project at the next meeting, Compton said.

A class president also will be chosen at the next meeting.

The Leadership Lamar County class will meet every month through May 2010, and the class will have meetings focusing on the community through different angles, such as community awareness, county and city government, health care, industry and law enforcement.

“Class is set aside to have different speakers come in and communicate how the community operates, as a whole, as individuals, as the government,” Compton said. “Each speaker is from that area.”

In addition, outside the meetings, the class will work on their chosen project.
