LC Chamber prepares for annual banquet

The Lamar County Chamber of Commerce begins a new fiscal year with a celebration of achievements of the past 12 months.
The annual awards banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Love Civic Center.
Tickets are $25 each, or a table of eight is offered for $200. Gold and Silver sponsorships are still available. Ticket reservations are requested before 5 p.m. Thursday for this catered event. “We encourage everyone, members and non-members alike, to make plans to attend Tuesday evening and be a part of Leadership on the Rise,” said Mindy Moree, chamber director.
Keynote speaker is Art Roberts, senior vice president-chamber relations for the Texas Association of Business.
Roberts has served for 39 years in the chamber profession, the last 18 in his current position. His division works with chambers throughout Texas on business issues facing their members or the operation of the chamber organization and serves as CEO for the professional association for Chamber Executives (TCCE).
He served as chief executive officer of four Texas chambers of commerce: Lamesa, Edinburg, Odessa and El Paso.
He has authored two books. “Operating the Volunteer Organization,” written for the staff of volunteer organizations received national publication. “Recognizing Your Role as a Volunteer” was released in 2004.
Roberts was a founding member of the Board of the Center for Chamber of Commerce Excellence, an education program for chamber executives in four states operated through the University of Oklahoma.
In addition to Roberts’ presentation, awards will be presented during the banquet, including Ambassador of the Year, Outstanding Community Service Award, Small Business of The Year by The Small Business Development Center, Industrial Appreciation by Paris Economic Development Corporation, Crape Myrtle Award for Civic Beautification by Crape Myrtle Committee and Historical Preservation Committee Visionary Award.
There will be a silent auction this year, with proceeds going toward the Trolley de Paris project. Auction items include items from Spangler’s, Paris Framing & Designs, Bealls Department Store, Chapman’s Florist, A Piece of Cake and many more.
The evening will conclude with the drawing for prizes from tickets sold to raise funds for Trolley de Paris. Prizes for the drawing include a Howard Miller grandfather clock, retail value $7,000, donated by Gary Brown of Uptown Properties; a 2009 Deluxe American Ash Stratocaster electric guitar, retail value $2,200, from Rockin L Music; and a $1,000 shopping spree from various merchants such as: Belk, The Collegiate Shoppe, Always Welcome, Gene the Jeweler and Bridal and others.
Closing remarks on the chamber’s vision for the future will be made by Kenny Dority, who will receive the gavel from the 2008-2009 chairman, Pike Burkhart, Sr.
