With the exception of the City of Paris, other Lamar County entities fell behind on sales tax distributions for the first eight months of the year compared to 2008 collections, a statewide trend according to Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.
And Sun Valley and Toco, which for years benefitted from being the only alcohol sales outlets in the county, experienced a significant dip in sales tax revenues for October as indicated by a 57.30 percent drop for Sun Valley and a 51.68 percent drop for Toco in checks compared to a year ago.
Sun Valley collected $2,385.79 in its October check compared to $5,587.60 in October 2008. Toco collected $2,424.85 compared to $5,018.65.
In a report released earlier in the week, Combs said the state collected $1.47 billion in sales tax in September, down 12.5 percent compared to a year ago.
“Declining sales tax collections, which began in February, have continued with September’s collections Combs said. “Weakness is still evident in all major sectors of the state economy, including oil and natural gas, retail trade and construction. Decreases in monthly collections are expected to continue through the end of 2009.”
Combs distributed monthly sales allocation of $282.8 million to Texas cities, down 7.3 percent compared to last October. Texas counties received sales tax allocation of $25.5 million, down 10.7 percent compared to a year ago. October sales tax figures represent sales that occurred in August.
The City of Paris received $547,896.98 in October, a 2.6 percent increase from October 2008 when the city collected $533,533.72. The city is up 10.45 percent on year-to-date collections.
Reno’s distribution this month is $14,893.52, an 8.99 percent increase compared to the $13,664.02 received in October 2008, but the city is down 1.51 percent year-to-date.

In Red River county, Annona, which allows alcohol sales, is the only entity in the county ahead of 2008 totals. The city is 8.30 percent ahead of October 2008 collections and 8.30 percent ahead for the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2008.
Cooper and Pecan Gap, both in Delta County show gains compared to 2008. Cooper is up .72 percent for the first eight months and Pecan Gap is up 6.59 percent. Honey Grove in Fannin County is down slightly in October with a .24 percent decrease and shows a 4.55 percent year-to-date. Bonham, the county seat, showed a 7.99 percent decline in October and a 2.88 percent decrease year-to-date.
