Lady Patriots rout Greenville-Phoenix

Published November 18, 2009

PATTONVILLE — Prairiland’s Lady Patriots had their first opportunity to work out some kinks from their volleyball season in their season opener Tuesday night at Patriot Gym.

They did that in a mighty way, claiming a 46-4 triumph over the Greenville-Phoenix Charter School Lady Firebirds.

Eight of the 12 players on the Prairiland squad were on the Lady Patriot varsity volleyball team, which just wrapped up its season a week ago.

Each Lady Patriot got significant playing time in the contest and nine of the 12 players scored two or more points.

Prairiland was led in scoring by Leila Calabria, who scored 10 points in the balanced scoring effort. Payton Connot, Jaci Sikes and Allison Wolf added six points apiece and Jenniffer Justice scored five points.

The balanced scoring attack allowed each player to work on their work on the offensive side of the court, which head coach Steven Weddle said has impressed him so far this season.

“We seem to be shooting the ball better this year,” he said. “We’re still working on running our offense better.”

Expectations are high at Prairiland this season, as many players are veterans on the squad who have been through the grind of the season for at least two seasons.

“We have nine players back that have been through the system for at least two years,” Weddle said. “It helps just knowing the system.”

Veterans and newcomers alike contributed in Tuesday’s game.

The scoring began with Kelsey Klingler scoring two points on a put-back off another player’s miss. That was followed by a layup by Justice after a pass by Klingler. Callie Tucker then converted one free throw and Klingler scored on a layup to give the Lady Patriots a 7-0 lead only three minutes into the game.

At that point, five players came into the game off the bench and picked up where the starting five left off.

Sikes stole the ball from an opposing player and drove the length of the court for a layup and was followed by Connot and Calabria doing the same thing. Connot and Calabria added layups before the end of the quarter to give Prairiland a 17-0 lead through the first quarter.

The Lady Patriots kept up their solid play throughout the remainder of the contest and finished their scoring late in the fourth quarter with a jumper by Katy Evans.

Greenville-Phoenix was led in scoring by Jalessa Jones and Beatrice Delenon, who had two points apiece.

The Lady Patriots are scheduled to return to the court at 4 p.m. Saturday when they host Maud.

“They have already beaten two teams in our district – Redwater and DeKalb,” Weddle said. “That game is going to let us know where we’re at.”
