A night of wonder under the big top

Published October 21, 2009

Hold on to your seats, the circus rolled in to Paris today.

The circus is in town today only with two performances at the Lamar County Fairgrounds, 1750 6th St. N.E. The two-hour shows are at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Carson & Barnes Circus makes its winter home in Hugo, Okla., also known as Circus City USA, which creates an inspiring opportunity to see the wonders and magic of the performers that make up the circus we can call our own.

The Carson & Barnes Circus has taken its show on the road for more than 70 years. The long-standing tradition of bringing the show to the audience continues, and now this is the only circus performing under the Big Tent. As many classic forms of entertainment go by the wayside, take the time to experience the wonders and excitement that still abounds with a trip to the circus at the fairgrounds.

Young and old can experience the spectacle and awe that makes a circus what it is. Amazing feats performed high overhead on the trapeze, the high wire and double wheels of destiny are coupled with the crazy antics of the clowns, dog acts and the tour de force — performing elephants. And the show goes on with about 100 performers and animals who take to the rings to show off their skills.

The show is filled with breathtaking speed as the performance rings are constantly replaced with act after act. Audience members will enjoy the show for days to come as they discuss their favorites with friends and family.

And if you show up a little early, the family can view the large traveling zoo.

As Hugo, Okla., is less than an hour away, you can also visit and tour the Endangered Ark Foundation, where this circus family cares for and preserves the endangered Asian elephant among other threatened animals.

The success of the program was highlighted by the birth of an elephant who went on her first show tour in 2008.

Taking the family to the circus is a treat for everyone involved. Be ready for “The Biggest Tent Circus in America” as these performers pull out the stops for a close-to-home audience.
