Wildcats edge Van Alstyne

Published December 31, 2009

SHERMAN — The Paris Wildcats rebounded from their second loss of the season to edge Van Alstyne, 41-39, and capture the third-place trophy Wednesday at the American Bank Sherman Holiday Invitational Class A-3A Division.

Equettis Jenkins led Paris (16-2) in scoring with a game-high 17 points, while Kendall King added seven.

It was the final game of the 2009 portion of the season for the 14th-ranked Wildcats, who resume their season on Tuesday at New Boston before returning home on Friday to face the state ranked Hugo, Okla., Buffaloes in a Red River Showdown.

Wildcat third-year head coach Billy Mack Steed notched his 300th win on Tuesday against Athens and picked up his 301st coaching victory against Van Alstyne to move to 301-133 in a 15-year coaching career at Detroit, Quitman, North Lamar and Paris High.

“Obviously, getting (300th) felt pretty good, especially since it was a close game against a tough team,” said Steed, referring to his team’s 47-46 win over Athens Tuesday afternoon, which was the 13th straight win of the season by the Wildcats.

Paris saw its winning streak snapped a few hours after that Athens win by ninth-ranked, Class 2A Melissa, 55-48, in the semifinal round Tuesday night.

Melissa fell to Crandall, another state-ranked Class 3A school, in the tournament championship round on Wednesday.
