Defense name of game in HG-Cooper matchup

Published August 30, 2009

HONEY GROVE — In early-season football games it is the offense that usually has the advantage, but the Friday night Honey Grove-Cooper matchup was a game of defense.

The Bulldogs managed enough offense to defeat the Warriors 16-0 and to control the ball most of the game.

Cooper running back Wyzer Moore accounted for both Bulldog touchdowns on runs of two yards each in the second and fourth quarters.

The other points came on a safety in the third period, when Honey Grove snapped the ball over its punter’s head and he raced to knock it out of the end zone.

Cooper running back Montrel Roberts was the leading rusher with 105 yards on 18 carries, one a 52-yard scamper around his left end that set up the second touchdown.

Ty Huie added 74 yards on five carries and Pee Wee Jeffery 70 yards on 12 carries.

In all, seven Bulldog rushers raced for 328 yards, and three receivers added another 14 yards.

Cooper kept the ball more than two-thirds of the game.

Honey Grove managed only 57 yards on 28 carries.

On the negative side for Cooper, the Bulldogs were penalized nine times for 85 yards.

Defensively, almost everybody on the Bulldog squad got into the act, with Tommy Walker and Landon Rackley making two solo tackles each.

Jacob Vaughan had six assists and Eli Mauldin five.

Huie completed three passes and had one interception in 14 tries, prompting Cooper Coach Ronnie Green to say: “We are going to have to work on our passing game next week.”

Green said after the game: “We have to get better and fix some mistakes. We looked good on the offensive line. They blocked well throughout the game.”

It was a defensive struggle the first quarter, with both teams making critical fumbles that stopped promising drives.

Cooper fumbled first at the Warriors’ 48, and Honey Grove rammed the ball downfield to the Bulldog 30 before losing the ball on a bad snap from center.

It was late in the second quarter before the first score of the game came.

Honey Grove punted the ball to the Cooper 2. From there, the Bulldogs began a methodical march, amassing six first downs.

Nineteen plays later, the Bulldogs had moved the ball 52 yards to the Warrior 2. From there, Moore plunged across for the first score. Dan Beeler booted the extra just over the crossbar.

Honey Grove had the ball for only four plays in the second quarter.

Cooper had the ball most of the third period, holding Honey Grove to three and out on its only three possessions.

The safety came with 33 seconds left in that quarter to put the score at 9-0.

Cooper drove the ball to the Honey Grove 19 early in the fourth period, then lost it on downs.

Again they held the Warriors to three and out, and got the ball back on their own 46 after a punt.

A running play of 52 yards carried it to the 2, and Moore again plunged through the middle of his line for a score. Beeler booted the final point of the night.

The Bulldogs host Whitewright at 7:30 p.m. Friday in their first home game of the season, while the Honey Grove Warriors make the trip to face Wolfe City at the same time Friday.
