Ladonia Frontier Days kicks off 44th year

LADONIA — Western fun for the entire family is on its way as Ladonia kicks off its 44th annual Ladonia Rodeo and Frontier Days Celebration July 9-11.

The fun begins at 8:30 p.m. Thursday with the first night of the Ladonia Rodeo, to be held at Eastman Arena, FR 64 at CR 3660.

Presented by the Ladonia Rodeo Association, Inc, the rodeo features eight traditional rodeo events plus ranch bronc riding. Books open July 6 for all events. Call 903-846-2421 from 2 to 10 p.m. Entry fees are $70/$140 with a first place buckle and payout and $500 added money for each event.

Thursday night features a Mutton Bustin’ for kids ages 7 and under. Entry is $20. Book for this event open July 6. Call 903-486-2043. A first place buckle is to be awarded.

On Friday night the featured event is Mini Bull Riding for riders ages 14 and under and weighing 115 pounds or less. Entry fee for this event is $50 and books are open. Call 903-886-3114. The first 16 qualifying callers will compete, and first place rider will receive a buckle and payout. The finals will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Stock for the mini bull ride is provided by Bad Little Buckers and Broken Arrow Mini Bulls.

Ace High of Ravenna will entertain rodeo fans at a dance Saturday after the rodeo. Admission to the dance in included in the rodeo admission price.

Other features to be held nightly are a boot find, a calf scramble and performances by professional rodeo clown Ron “Iceman” Hunter of Holdenville, Okla.

Admission to the Ladonia Rodeo is $6 for adults and $4 for kids. Stock producer for the rodeo is Wing Rodeo Co., Bogata.

On Saturday, before the rodeo, visit downtown Ladonia for the 44th annual Frontier Days Celebration. Come early for the Ladonia Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary Breakfast, from 6:30 to 9 a.m.

Activities begin at 9 a.m. with the men’s and women’s hay toss competition. Other activities include a horse show toss, shoe kicking, bubble gum blowing, watermelon seed spitting, a “knockout” free throw contest, and three Little Britches events — a sack race, hula hoop contest and stick horse race. A raw egg toss closes out the mornings activities.

At high noon, a “Second Generation Shoot-out” is scheduled, featuring the Conley Gang and the Sulphur Bottom Boys.

“Several areas have been provided for entertaining the kids including a giant slide, a climbing wall and an obstacle course, located behind city hall,” said LaVonne Duncan, one of the event organizers. “We’ve got quite a few venders lined up for the day. Everything’s right downtown. Just park on the street and come join the fun.”

Activities continue through the early afternoon with the “Ladonia 500” terrapin race, a cow chip throwing contest and the 8th annual Ladonia amateur arm wrestling competition.
