Local artists to show work at Funky Finds

Published March 10, 2010

A pair of local artists/crafters are to take part this weekend in the second annual Funky Finds Spring Fling to be held at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth.

Beatrice Ardila of Paris and Tamara Green of Detroit have been associated with Funky Finds, a blog dedicated to promoting independent artists, crafters and designers, for a number of years.

Ardila — who hails from San Cristóba, Venezuela — is an architect, photographer and crafter now living in Paris. Her art prints and hand-crafted hair accessories and jewelry have been featured on the Funky Find Web site for some time, but the arts and crafts fair set for March 13 is the first public event she has participated in since coming to the states.

“The first Funky Finds Spring Fling was held in April 2009,” said Ardila, whose works are marketed under the name beatart. “Given their success with more than 2,500 attendees and hundreds of dollars raised for charity, they decided to repeat the event this year.”

Ardila works in fabric, cord, felt and recycled items to produce hand-crafted hair accessories, such as head bands, and necklaces. She also offers prints of her own photography.

Green met Jessica Hood-Dougherty — the founder of the Funky Finds Web site and organizer of the Spring Fling — at college.

“Funky Finds offers a very affordable, yet amazingly effective means of introducing lots of potential customers to my craft, which happens to be painting custom wall murals in schools, homes, nurseries, offices, churches, or just about anywhere,” said the Red River county native. “I obviously can’t take new customers to all of the sites of my past work, but Funky Finds lets me take examples of that work to those individuals via the Web.”

Green’s work is featured in the library of the new Detroit Elementary School, as well as other locations in the community and one of her custom murals was among the auction items offered at the Child Advocacy Center’s Sweetheart Soiree last month.

Green also has been tapped to provide art for the cover of this year’s Funky Finds Spring Fling event directory.

Hood-Dougherty launched Funky Finds in March of 2006, focusing on the work of independent artists, crafters and designers. Her aim was to promote the “funky” art of independent artists and crafters everywhere.

The Funky Finds Spring Fling is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3409 Burnett-Tandy Road, in the Small Exhibit (Poultry) Building. Admission is free, and the event is family and pet friendly.
