Walters reappointed as chair of V&CC

Paris Visitors and Convention Council met Thursday to elect a chairman and discuss funding requests from two upcoming events.
Bobby Walters was reappointed as chairman, an election taken as part of the annual requirements of the council’s by-laws.
The Southwest Tandem Rally applied for $2,500 to offset meal costs for a two-day ride around Lamar County set for April 23-25, 2010.
The V&CC agreed to fund part of the requested amount, or $1,250.
The 2010 rally is hosted by the Dallas Area Tandem Enthusiasts, which chose Paris for next year’s location. Organizers expect the use of up to 75 motel rooms for two nights. The rally has been held for 20 years, five times in Texas — Waco in 1991, Nacogdoches in 1993 and 1996, Tyler in 2000 and Fredericksburg in 2005. Paris was chosen for its historical downtown, cooperative community spirit and the surrounding smooth roads traversing the north Texas plains, according to event information provided to the V&CC.
The Roxton Rallye de Paris is a road race held in the area the weekend after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28 and 29.
Sponsoring groups, the Armadillo Rally Logistics and Rally America, requested $2,500 from the V&CC to help with road repair fees and worker appreciation.
The V&CC agreed to fund 80 percent or $2,000.
The council uses a scoring system for all funding requests to determine the impact an event will have on the area. The criteria includes how many people will spend the night or nights in area motels and hotels, the time of year, other areas of income and effective marketing and planning for the event.
