ROXTON — Dan Pickering moved into the position of interim superintendent of Roxton Independent School District this week, replacing Kenneth Hall, who left the superintendent post to take the head spot in Crawford.
Pickering is not new to Lamar County. He grew up here, where his family has lived for decades.
He and his wife, Jennie, retired last September after nine years as superintendent in Guthrie ISD.
They returned to Lamar County, and Pickering said he was happy to get the call from Region 8 Education Service Center about the Roxton position.
“The Roxton School Board voted for me to take the interim job without ever seeing me,” he said.
Pickering said he would be thrilled to get the job on a permanent basis.
“That, of course, would be months down the road, when the board has had an opportunity to review my performance,” he said.
He and his wife have two children, both in the teaching profession.
Daughter Dana Garza teaches in the Friendship ISD in Lubbock.
Son Welton Pickering has just started his career at Alba-Golden ISD.
Pickering was superintendent at Guthrie for nine years.
“We needed to get back to Lamar County,” he said. “We love this area, and we needed to be back here.”
Before Guthrie, Pickering had been in the Kountze area near Beaumont and spent a few years in the Cooper ISD before going to Guthrie.
“Roxton is unique and a good school system,” he said. “There is good community support for the school, and the people value the school.”
He and his wife now live in the Charleston Community in Delta County.
“We have had the place several years,” he said.
This week, Pickering has been busy meeting with the school staff and students.
“We have a strong staff, and I am real excited about working with them,” he said. “In the next few days, I want to meet with as many community leaders as I can.”
Pickering graduated from Cooper High School in 1970, received his bachelor’s degree from the now Texas A&M University-Commerce, from where he earned his Texas Superintendent Certification.
