Tigers end season with shutout win

Published November 8, 2009

DEKALB — The Clarksville Blue Tigers ended the 2009 football campaign in impressive fashion, hammering the winless DeKalb Bears 39-0 in a game played in Bears Stadium on Friday night.

Clarksville jumped out to a 6-0 advantage after one quarter and never looked back as the Blue Tigers scored touchdowns in all four quarters.

The victory was the second win in district play for the Tigers as Dewaski Davis’ team ends the league run with a 2-5 record. The Blue Tigers’ season concludes with a record of 4-6, which matches the record of the 2008 team.

After a playoff run in 2008, DeKalb finished its season at the bottom of the district standings with an 0-7 mark. The Bears season ended without a win, as DeKalb produced an 0-10 overall record.

The Tigers played a solid game defensively, limiting the Bears to just 62 yards of total offense. DeKalb managed just five first downs, with the first arriving near halftime.

“We wanted to come out and establish defense right out of the gate and I told the kids they’re going to be like a snake out here and we’ve got to be ready and focused for them,” Davis said. “Defensively, we rose to the occasion and took them out of what they wanted to do, and once we figured out that, we knew we were going to be able to do what we wanted to do.”

Five players scored touchdowns for Clarksville, with the shortest score arriving from 15 yards out when receiver Jarold McPherson scored on an end around with 2:43 left in the third. The tally extended the Tigers advantage to 33-0.

Quarterback H.B. Rosser’s scoring run of 67 yards was the longest play of the game. It gave Clarksville a 13-0 advantage with 6:47 left in the first half.

Rosser was the leading ground gainer in the contest, using 14 totes to pick up 124 yards while Radonte Edwards added 78 yards on 11 carries. Quan Bell contributed 58 yards with his six totes for the young Blue Tigers.

Freshman wideout Gary Moore was the lone player to record two scores, as he hauled in touchdown receptions of 27 and 22 yards from Rosser. Moore also had 97 receiving yards.

The Tigers started slowly, punting the football away on their first two possessions of the game. But Moore’s 27-yard catch for a touchdown with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter gave them the lead for good.

The Blue Tigers led 20-0 at the intermission, with Josh Burks recording a pair of huge sacks to cause the home team to remain scoreless through the first two frames.

Clarksville forced three turnovers in the game. All three were interceptions, with McPherson, Trea O’Neal and Devonte Shavers picking off one pass apiece. Shavers was playing in his final game as a member of the Tigers team.

The Bears forced a pair of Clarksville mistakes, but coach Buddy Ray’s team was unable to capitalize. In fact, DeKalb recorded negative yardage on 13 offensive plays during the four quarters of action.

The Tigers will lose linebacker Keyondrian Harris, who produced some big defensive plays in the game, as well as Dariel Rosser, Zach Parker and Jeremy Ricks.

The Bears were forced to punt six times during the four quarters of action. The teams moved to a running game clock early in the final period after Edwards scored the final touchdown on a 38-yard blast with 11:36 left in the game.

Quan Bell contributed a strong 35-yard, second-quarter run to account for the other Clarksville touchdown.

Jarrion Roberts was among the Clarksville players who applied strong defensive pressure to DeKalb quarterback Matthew Davis, as he was limited to minus-61 yards rushing.

“It was a big win for our program. We wanted to finish on a high and we want to go into offseason positive. We’ve got to get stronger. We know we’ve got a lot of talent and a lot of young players who grew up this year and provided some great leadership. Then, we’ve just got to take it just one day at a time and we’ve got to get stronger and wiser,” Davis said.

Rivercrest edged Hooks in the season finale this past year, but Hooks displayed its improvement with a dominating performance in Friday’s game.

The Hornets limited the Rebels to 146 yards of total offense in the game, had two interceptions and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Two first-quarter touchdowns set the tone of the game, as Hooks claimed a 14-0 lead after the first period. That lead was extended to 35-0 by halftime.

Rivercrest junior quarterback Brady Kennedy completed 4 of 21 passes for 72 yards. He also had 12 carries for 17 yards. Running back Jordan White had seven carries for 49 yards, including one 36-yard run. White also had three receptions for 33 yards. John English had one reception for 39 yards.

Leonard (8-2, 5-2) advances to the postseason as a Division II representative from District 11-2A and is set to face Paul Pewitt at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Royse City High School in a bi-district round game.

The season is over for the Honey Grove (3-7, 2-5) squad.

Robinson opened the game’s scoring with his long touchdown run after only 17 seconds had ticked off the game clock. The Tigers extended their lead to 13-0 after a 4-yard run by Jake Buchanan later in the opening frame.

Honey Grove found the end zone early in the second quarter on a 4-yard run by sophomore quarterback Dillon Baugh and kicker Aaron Spann tacked on the extra point to close the gap to 13-6.

Tevin Daniels and Robinson scored on 1-yard runs before halftime, though, as Leonard led 27-7 at halftime.
