John Paul Snellen Sr.

John Paul Snellen Sr., 96, of Paris passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Paris Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Red Hill Cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with Rev. John McCollister officiating.

He was born Nov. 16, 1913, in Windom, the son of Leslie and Nora Mae Holton Snellen. He married Yvonne Lewis Dec. 16, 1945, in Hugo, Okla., a marriage lasting one week short of 64 years. He was a member of Bounds Baptist Church and Paris Lodge No. 165 AF & AM.

He was a veteran of World War II and was captured by the Japanese on Corregidor Island, Philippines and was sent to Japan on one of the infamous “Hell Ships.” He was a prisoner of war for 3 1/2 years. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, a victory ribbon, two service stripes, seven overseas service bars, the American Defense Service Ribbon with a bronze star, the Asian-Pacific campaign ribbon with two bronze stars, a good conduct medal and the Philippine Defense Ribbon with a bronze star.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edith Gray of Honey Grove and Audie Bailey of Honey Grove.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, of the home; a son, John Paul Snellen Jr.; granddaughters, Angela Snellen of Los Angeles and Alexandra Snellen of Midland; a great-granddaughter; special cousin, Dorothy Rogers; several nieces and nephews; and home health friends who helped to make his last months better.
