Help kids foster their creative interests

Published September 29, 2009

We were pleased last week to bring our readers the story of Breann Lewis of Bogata, the 10-year-old who placed first in the State Fair of Texas’ photography contest in the youth division, with a photo of a pair of family pets.

Lewis, daughter of Shaunda and Charles Don Lewis, has been encouraged to take up photography by her family as well as members of her “extended” family, James and Dee Woods and their children, Tim and Denise. That the Rivercrest fifth grade student has received no formal training in what she calls “almost her most favorite thing to do,” makes her achievement all the more remarkable.

With school finance in the shape it has been the past few years, many districts are cutting back or eliminating extracurricular programs, such as art and music, from their curriculum. As a result, a lot of kids across the state are being denied an outlet for their creative interests. It becomes that much more important for parents and other family to support and encourage the artistic expressions of the kids in their lives.

We urge our readers to take the time to support and encourage youngsters in their artistic endeavors, as well as the youth organizations, such as Scouting and 4-H, that work toward that end as well. Kids with creative outlets have been shown to have a better chance at success, not just in school but in life after they graduate.

Breann Lewis has turned her hobby into a creative outlet that has brought her success and recognition. Your kids can, too, with your help.
