Campaign honors the late Sgt. Jay Hoskins

Published November 23, 2009

The U.S. Marine Foundation Toys for Tots campaign comes to Lamar County this year in honor of the late Sgt. Jay Hoskins, USMC, killed in action Aug. 6.

Chandler Hoskins is honorary chairman of the campaign, which for the first time this year is being sponsored locally rather than by a group from Denison, according to chairman Gary O Martin, 1/Sgt, USMC (Retired).

The drive provides new toys to children of all ages.

“While this is our fifth season in this community, this is our first year as an independently authorized chapter,” Martin said. “Chandler graciously agreed to come and work alongside us to give back to the members of this community who have supported her and her family for the past four months in their time of loss.”

“I am asking for your assistance to fulfill the Christmas dreams of hundreds of our county’s most needy children,” Chandler Hoskins said. “Through a shiny new toy at Christmas, we can deliver a message of hope to help motivate growth of responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.”

In 2008, Toys for Tots locally served more than 300 children.

“I expect that number to at least double this year,” Martin said. “By many of us sharing a little of the things with which we have been blessed, we can make a huge difference for many.”

Toys for Tots has 27 confirmed supporting locations in the county with collection boxes at each location until Dec. 20.

Persons wishing to donate toys should bring a new unwrapped toy to any of the designated locations. Monetary donations made by check written to Marine Corps Toys for Tots. In the memo section, record Lamar County to ensure funds are designated specifically for Lamar County. Donations can be mailed to 123 Hideaway Lane in Powderly, Texas 75463. For more information, or request to be a designated location, call Martin at 903-784-8999.
