PRMC moving to North Campus a good decision

Published November 23, 2009

Paris Regional Medical Center’s recent announcement that all acute services are northward bound to the newer of the Essent Health care hospitals comes with a clear understanding that for the now privately-owned hospital to thrive it must use its facilities more efficiently.

It does not make much sense to spread out services between two hospitals when the former McCuistion Regional Medical Center facility is the newer facility and capable of accommodating both The Heart Hospital the Women and Children’s Hospital, and other acute care departments.

Dating to the consolidation of McCuistion with Christus St. Joseph, prior to Essent Health Care purchasing the hospitals in 2002, we have been told all hospital services would be moved to the North Campus, although with this move the South Campus will continue to be utilized in some capacity.

The move won’t be without challenges, as any project of this magnitude would have, but we are confident Essent officials have a plan in place to address those challenges and to overcome them.

The plan announced a week ago by Paris Regional Medical Center CEO Chris Dux and Essent CEO Michael W. Browder should put most concerns to rest. Essent has employed the Camden Group — one of the leading health care business advisory firms — to streamline the move as much as possible without overlooking any of the pieces of the puzzle during the move.

To include physicians and hospital staff in transition plans, Essent plans to hold regular advisories and appoint committees to give each department input into strategies. The hospital also has launched a Web site at www.prmcnorthwardbound.com with plans to populate the site with an area for comments, photos, and frequently asked questions. Along with regular updates in The Paris News, the hospital plans to include information on the Web site that will keep the public informed of the process and how the work involved could impact the public.

With each passing year since Essent arrived in the community we have seen a great improvement in services. Our medical community here — physicians and nurses — are second to none; and, with the support of Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma residents, this move northward by the hospital gives us reason to believe Paris Regional Medical Center will continue on its path toward excellence.
