While Lamar County Judge Brandon Bell and county commissioners gathered for a meeting inside the Lamar County Courthouse earlier today, a group of protesters marched outside, petitioning for the Confederate statue on the courthouse lawn to be moved to a historical museum.

“We are going to protest until they hear us,” Ashley Colvin said about a petition on social media calling for the statue’s removal that has more than 2,000 signatures. Not all of the 2,000 signatures are confirmed Lamar County residents. “We are going to protest until Judge Bell hears us."

Taisley Scroggin, who began the petition in early June, said the group has received no response from Bell or other county officials on a request to put the issue on a Commissioners' Court agenda.

“We plan to be out here every Monday for the next eight weeks,” Scroggin said.
